Our university’s adage of rise with Galata comes from a real story back in 17th century Ottoman Era. Hazârfen Ahmet Çelebi was the first human who was able to fly with a self-made wing made by himself based on his observations on birds. Despite the obligations and oppositions, he flew from Galata Tower to Üsküdar, the Anatolian Side of Istanbul only with the help of wind and his wing movements without any physical damage. This story represents why Galata is being selected as the symbol of our university. Even though there are restrictions and oppositions, curiosity that comes with the passion for science, sports are always the priority to us.
This passion had surpassed the continents and made people around the world curious as well. One of the most popular and interesting scientists is Leonardo Da Vinci that drew a project that had not been developed. He drew a bridge draft to the Sultan of Ottoman to connect the two sides between Galata and the Old Town. Today a bridge like his draft exists thanks to today’s technology. It is essential because even from the Roman Era the Galatea area has been the heart of science, curiosity, trade, development and knowledge. Istanbul Galata University represents this legacy of curiosity and aims to hand on to the next generations.
The socioeconomic and cultural development of the Late Ottoman Era and The Modern Day Türkiye generated around the Galata, Pera, Beyoğlu District due to this legacy. The first banks of the Ottomans, hotels, prestigious restaurants, bars and art galleries that still exist today are the products of this legacy.
